What should I wear to my session?

Picking out the right outfits not only has a huge impact on how your pictures turn out but can also be incredibly overwhelming if you don’t know where to start. With these few tips, picking out outfits for your next photo shoot will be less stressful.

1. For Group and Family Sessions: Don’t Match – Coordinate.
The easiest way to keep everyone coordinated is to decide on a color palette of around two to four colors for everyone to use as a reference when choosing outfits. It’s ideal to choose colors that are either all warm tones (such as yellow, orange, pink, and red) or cooler tones (such as blue, purple, and green). An easy way to coordinate outfits is to choose one item of clothing with a few colors (such as a dress) and pull that colors from that piece of clothing for others to wear. It’s important to avoid stark contrasts and keep clothing style consistent, whether that is casual or more formal (Sassine, 2017).

2. Other Tips:
• Don’t wear clothing that is too tight or too loose. Wear clothing that flatters your figure and that you feel confident in!
• Avoid too distracting of patterns – this can cause distortions to appear in the pictures.
• Minimal/simple or no accessories are better than over accessorizing – it can be distracting.
• Most often, it is best to have hair in a style that is loose and flexible but wear it how you are confident! (Allen, 2016).
• Keep location in mind when choosing outfits – different locations are going to have different colors, textures, and lighting. It is important to create contrast between outfits and the background (location). It is common to gravitate towards more simple clothing in busy locations, and busy clothing in plain locations.
• Keep in mind the weather – you don’t want to be shivering or sweating during your entire session! (Sawyer, 2018).
